Volume was estimated at 12,000 lots. Since the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its monthly supply and demand report Friday, inundating the market with a flood of bearish data, prices have weakened. Market sources have maintained that prices would have to come down to stimulate exports, which have remained consistently low. But while imports flooded the market in the early part of the season, they have tapered off substantially. Imports totaled just 1,349 bales last week, the second consecutive week the U.S. Census Bureau reported a weak number. Analysts said the current spread between importing cotton and buying U.S. cotton is low enough to have made the latter attractive to domestic mills. In fact, "we may have difficulty even reaching the U.S. goal (of 500,000 bales) if imports drop off to nothing," said Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc. The U.S. Department of Agriculture will release its weekly export report Friday. December ended down 0.34 at 72.78, having ranged from 73.10 to 72.65. The back months closed 0.36 to 0.05 lower. 181034 MET oct 96
