In what traders said was mainly a technical consolidation to the market's recent uptrend, speculators liquidated long positions after spot December failed to pierce resistance at 117.50 cents a lb. The abrupt midsession selloff briefly dragged the spot contract to an intraday low of 113.05, but shortcovering and fresh buying from the roasting sector sprung the market off its lows by the close. December fell 1.20 cents on the day to 115.10, after briefly touching a new six-week high of 117.50. Second-position March eased 1.50, to 106.15, while the outer months fell 2.05 to 2.50. Today's downturn would do little to crimp the coffee's upside potential, analysts said, noting it was only the second negative close in the last 10 days. "It's just a correction," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "It's not surprising that you would see some profit-taking," she added, pointing out that the nearby switch continued to widen, from 4.15 cents at the beginning of the month to nearly nine cents today. Technically, traders said December's close above 114.10 was relatively constructive and could insulate the market from further stop-loss selling. But December would face solid resistance at 118.75 cents, a breakout point from late-August, and again at 120 cents. Traders would be keeping tabs on key stock figures due out today and tomorrow. Few expected a large change on CSCE certified stock figures due out later Monday, but Green Coffee Association's consumer stock numbers for September could show a drawdown of between 100,000 and 200,000 bags, they said. Turnover on the exchange was estimated at a steady 8,509 lots Monday. 151110 MET oct 96
