Europe veg oils close sharply lower, trade active
LONDON, Oct 11 (Reuter) - Heavy falls in Chicago following
the release of the USDA's crop report triggered a sharply lower
close on the European vegetable oil market on Friday.
The USDA estimated 1996 U.S. soybean production at 2.346
billion bushels, above average U.S. trade estimates of 2.287
billion bushels and higher than the U.S. government's forecast
in September of 2.270 billion bushels.
Lower prices brought buyers into the market although some
were still reluctant to get involved at this stage.
"Chicago opened with sharp falls, but a lot of people want
to see the close before they commit themselves," said a trader.
Dutch soy oil closed 2.25 to 1.50 guilders down in a
tradeless market while rape oil was 2.50 to 2.75 guilders lower
after Nov/Jan traded at 96 and 95.50 and Feb/Apr at 97.75, 97
and 96.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
Palm oil trade had been very slow earlier with many Far East
players absent ahead of Saturday's annual Kuala Lumpur Commodity
Exchange (KLCE) dinner.
The release of two palm oil output and stock estimates next
week also made players wary with Ivan Wong's report due on
Monday and PORLA's offical figures on Tuesday.
However the lower Chicago opening weighed on prices and by
the close palm oil was $7.50 to $12.50 down across the board
after crude palm oil fetched $527.50 a tonne for Jan/Mar cif.
RBD oil traded at $495 for Nov and palm olein at $525 for
Nov, and Jan/Mar $530, $527.50 and $525 a tonne fob Malaysian
ports.
Coconut oil closed $12.50 to $10 down after Oct/Nov traded
at $727.50, Nov/Dec at $717.50, Dec/Jan at $710 and Jan/Feb at
$712.50. Palmkernel oil finished $10 to $15 down in a neglected
market.
