Traders said fund buying accounted for the bulk of the day's gains, reversing morning losses and lifting the most-active December contract to a peak of 115.40 cents a lb. But steady selling by origins limited the market's move to the upside and pinned the December position below chart support at 116.00 cents. December ended up 1.35 cents at 114.90, its highest close since Aug 30. December's premium to second-month March widened to 8.10 cents from 7.70 cents at the close Wednesday. However, the spot contract's steep premium to the back months could be short-lived, traders said, with stockpiles expected to build in the coming months. "In the immediate future, supplies are still going to be tight and that is reflected in the December contract," said an industry analyst. "Eventually there will be more supplies, which is keeping the back months lower." Reflecting the supply crunch, U.S. exchange-certified coffee stocks are at the lowest levels in 12 years, she noted, with many new-crop Latin American beans slow coming to market. Mexico said its crop could be delayed due to heavy rains while there were also reports that Guatemala and Costa Rica could also face crop delays. Traders continued to turn to the options pit Thursday, with call options turnover reaching 1,496 lots by the close. An estimated 851 lots of put options changed hands. Future's volume was moderate, at an estimated 8,686 lots. 111051 MET oct 96
