Benchmark December futures slumped early in the day to their lowest level since early August. But roasters (processors) were eager buyers at the lows, pushing prices back into positive territory. "Roasters were buying, especially further out," said one trader. "They feel it's a pretty good value at these levels." But persistent price-fixing by producer countries would continue to keep a lid on the upside, the trader added. December delivery rose by 0.95 cent per lb, to 104.55, trading from 102.75 to 104.70. Second-month March climbed 0.90, to 101.45. An estimated 5,850 lots were exchanged on the day. Little impact was seen from the latest round of certified stock figures, released after the close of business on Monday. The certified cache fell by a slight 565 60-kg bags as of September 20, to 42,102 bags. Meanwhile, a gathering in London of key producer and consumer representatives had yet to produce any sparks. Traders were quick to dismiss remarks made by a senior official of the producers' cartel predicting the eventual participation by Mexico and Guatemala in export quota schemes. Oliviera Silva, the secretary general of the Association of Coffee Producing Countries, said he was confident both Mexico and Guatemala would eventually join the producers' cartel. Last week, coffee officials in both countries publically reiterated their independence from the group. The International Coffee Organization heads into the second day of its gathering on Tuesday, while the ACPC is slated to meet on Friday and Saturday. On the charts, 101.50 cents remained a major support area, while resistance was seen at 106.75-107.25. 251041 MET sep 96
