An early bout of fund buying drove prices to session highs, matching Thursday's intraday peak of 105.30. But the gains proved fleeting, as origins seeking to capitalize on the higher prices sold heavily into the rally. Benchmark December futures ended unchanged, at 103.60 cents per lb, having traded over a narrow range from 103.40 to 105.30. Second-month March fell 0.05 cent, to 100.55. Volume was estimated at 5,076 lots. Traders continued to monitor events in key grower Colombia, after mounting unrest sent jitters through the market this morning. So far there have been no reported assualts on coffee-related infrastructure, but earlier Friday, leftist rebels reportedly set five buses ablaze in the central, coffee-growing province of Tolima. Next week, the spotlight is expected to shift to talks among key producing countries. Both the International Coffee Organization and the Association of Coffee Producing Countries, the 14-member producers' cartel, have scheduled talks in London late next week. Coffee officials in Guatemala and Mexico on Friday reaffirmed their independence from the ACPC. While neither country had been expected to join the group -- which has sought to boost prices through annual export limits -- analysts said the market would be paying close attention to signals from Mexico about its 1996/97 export program. In the 1995/96 crop year, Mexico was an unusually heavy exporter in a bid to generate badly-needed income. But with its economy somewhat more stable heading into the next harvest, more of that coffee may be consumed domestically, said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "Mexico's economy is more of a factor than anything else," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "Even though Mexico can't join the ACPC, are they going to export heavily in first half of year?" she said. "If so, the market would come down. But if they don't, then you may see a little more support." 231110 MET sep 96
