"It was quiet most of the day," one trader said. "The market stalled in front of this report." The September USDA crop report is due Wednesday at 0830 EDT. Industry analysts pegged the USDA's production estimate between 18.3 million and 18.8 million 480-lb bales, with most expectations at the high end of the range. But the trader said he heard one estimate as low as 17.9 million bales. In August, the U.S. Department of Agriculture put production at 18.577 million bales. They estimated exports would come in at 6.6 million bales and ending stocks at 4.0 million bales.. In his speech at the Western Cotton Conference in California Friday, closely watched cotton merchant William B. Dunavant put U.S. 1996/97 cotton production at 18.65 million 480-lb bales and exports at 6.0 million bales. He estimated ending stocks at 4.7 to 4.8 million bales.
