Dealers said fund liquidation pressured the market from the outset, driving the benchmark December contract to a more than three-week low of 108.50 cents a lb. But the 108.50-mark provided firm support for December, and traders said the ring was forced to scramble to cover short positions. December coffee ended up 1.30 cents a lb, to 112.90 cents, after ranging between 114.00 and 108.50. Spot September ended 2.00 cents higher, at 124.60, while the remaining months finished 0.95 to 1.25 firmer. After settling lower on fund liquidation the last three consecutive sessions, dealers and analysts said the market was due for a technical correction. "It moved down so quickly, it got oversold," said Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka. Spilka said recent news out of Colombia reporting possible delays in coffee exports due to trucker protests, crumbling infrastructure and leftist guerillas, may have provided some fundamental impetus to today's upswing. Technically, he said the market's about 50 percent retracement since reaching a peak of 125.20 basis December on August 26, suggested some support would emerge at current levels. Volume was heavy, at estimated 11,800 lots. 091223 MET sep 96
