CSCE world sugar ends barely budged before weekend
NEW YORK, Sept 6 (Reuter) - CSCE world sugar futures
settled a thinly-traded session barely moved from opening
levels, as prices relaxed after a volatile week of trade,
floor sources said.
The October contract climbed to an 18-month high of 12.20
earlier this week on mostly fund buying, which fueled prices
out of a six-week trading range between 11.40-12.00 cents.
October sugar, which expires September 30, closed 0.01
cent weaker at 12.00, having traded from 12.02 to 11.93. March
settled up 0.02 to 11.69, while the deferred contracts
finished 0.03 to 0.08 higher.
Volume was estimated at 11,292 lots.
Scale-down trade buying held front-month October at 12.00
cents today, as the October/March spread narrowed slightly to
0.31 on the close compared with 0.34 on Thursday's close.
Market sources saud the spreads could continue to weaken, with
one dealer forecasting a drop in October/March to under 0.20.
"The spreads will weaken because of the large spec long
position in October," he said. "The specs are making money,
but they have to get out of those Octs."
Meantime, the trade could continue to buy October on dips,
which will keep the market steady.
The back months are likely to firm, said a trader, noting
new contract highs made today in the deferred contracts.
Market sources pegged key support between 11.90 to 11.98
basis the October contract.
In London, white sugar futures settled mixed and towards
the lower end of the day's range. October ended 30 cents
higher at $348.00, while December closed off 60 cents to
$345.00.
