CSCE October sugar ended off just 0.01 cent at 11.73 cents, after trading in a 11.67-11.74 cents a lb range. Support was seen around 11.50 cents, with resistance around 11.80 cents, basis October. LCE white sugar ended mostly weaker but volume was thin. "The market is pretty comfortable at current levels, with many speculators long from lower levels, and a month to go before the October contract expires, so there's no urgency about rolling into the March 1997 contract," one trader said. In physical market news, German statistician F.O. Licht estimated total western and eastern European beet sugar output at 27.827 million tonnes raw value in 1996/97, compared with 28.573 million in 1995/96. "The lower crop may be doubly welcomed in view of the fact it appears the level of stocks brought forward from 1995/86 will be considerably higher than forecast," Licht said. The forecasts for a smaller European beet crop means the premium for white sugar could rise again, helping to support demand for raw sugar and the No. 11 world market, analysts said. "The lower European beat crop data was largely expected due to poor weather in Europe affecting the crop," Merrill Lynch futures strategist Bill O'Neill said. "But it's one reason why the market is holding up quite well, with the 11.50 support level still intact," he said. Total world sugar production in 1996-97 is forecast to fall from the record levels of 1995-96, but consumption is still not expected to exceed supply, analysts said. informacije: Slavica Bocek telefon: 01/273-927 fax: 01/4550-148 291151 MET aug 96
