"If you weren't trading September-December, you weren't trading," said one dealer. Concern that already scarce supplies of certifiable coffee would continue to shrink further before the arrival of new-crop coffee has given the September premium a sharp boost in recent days. Trade focused on the switch from the outset Monday, as speculators, worried about a possible sharp drop on tonight's CSCE certified stock report, bid the spot premium out to more than 10 cents a lb. But a drop in September's open interest as of Friday -- reflecting what traders said was persistent short covering by commodity funds -- touched off some switch-related selling ahead of the close. September's open interest fell sharply for the second consecutive day, paring 1,629 positions to 8,990 as of Friday's close. September's premium eased to nine cents on Monday, from 9.25 at Friday's close. Traders said the CSCE's certified stock figures, due out at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT, would likely show a decline on the week. But with stocks already at sharply depleted levels, traders said tonight's certified number may have little impact on the market. "If we come down 10,000 bags it wouldn't mean anything, because there is virtually nothing there," a trader said. September futures rose 1.05 cent a lb, to 116.15, ranging from 115.05 to 117.25. December climbed 1.30, to 107.15, while the remaining months rose 0.60 to 1.50 cent. 131141 MET aug 96
