"People have had time to digest the Indonesian news and although there is still some confusion over how long the ban will last, most now see no real problems," said one trader. "I think we will see an export quota for February followed by a further easing in March and a return to normal business by April," said one. Traders said there was no shortage of palm oil in Europe and tanks in Rotterdam were well stocked. "Major shippers anticipated some kind of action by the Indonesian government and a lot of palm oil was shipped during November and December," said another trader. So far no one had called force majeure, but one trader said: "It will happen as sure as night follows day." Generally the market was quiet on what was effectively the last full working day of 1997, although officially New Year's Eve is a full trading day with many plants and offices working with reduced staff. At the close of business crude palm oil cif Europe was unchanged to $5 lower with Apr/Jun the first position quoted. Among products RBD palm oil was $10 down and olein $5 lower. Coconut oil held its $5 gain while palmkernel oil drifted back to unchanged. Soy oil closed mixed with sellers 0.50 guilders up to 0.50 guilders down after May/Jul traded at 119 guilders and Aug/Oct 117.50 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill. Rape oil finished with sellers one guilder up to two guilders down after Jan fetched 127.50 and Feb/Apr 126 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
