"Coffee prices will probably go lower from here as the inventories are rising and a larger crop next year is on the way," Salomon Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. CSCE March coffee was ended down 2.60 cents at 159.80 cents a pound, after trading a 162.40-158.50 range. Coffee prices have fallen sharply in the past ten days, after seeing a three month high on December 10 at 188.50 cents in the March contract. The March contract's five-day moving-average is now back below its 21-day moving average, but remains above the 55-day average, analysts noted. The March/May spread ended little changed around 4.00 cents a pound, but has contracted from over 8.00 cents in early December as The coffee market's six-week rally to 6-1/2 month highs came to an abrupt halt last week, as funds liquidated long positions, prompted by a build up in CSCE certified stocks. CSCE coffee stocks have risen to 99,740 60-kg bags as of December 22, up from less than 20,000 bags in late November. A large crop next year Brazil is also expected to ease the tightness. The U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) attache's report Tuesday revised revised upward its estimate of Brazilian coffee production estimate for 1996/97 (July-June) to 28.0 million 60 kg-bags, compared to the previous estimate of 27.5 million bags. The USDA also revised up its Brazilian production estimate for 1997/98 to 26 million bags. 291153 MET dec 97
