"It was a very quiet market today -- waiting for the holidays," said one trader. "It didn't fall further because people don't want to sell anymore, but it's still looking to the south because of the technical picture and the funds are heavily long." Benchmark March arabicas fell 1.60 cents per lb on the day, to 157.05 cents, after ranging between 157.60 and 154.00 cents. Second-month May closed 0.75 cent lower at 153.25 cents, while the rest of the board finish down 1.00 to up 0.50 cent. The March/May switch narrowed to 3.80 cents from 4.65 cents at the close on Friday. Arabica prices gapped lower at the outset, surpassing down 1.00 cent pre-opening expectations, as news of a large increase in the speculative net long position put the market on the defensive, traders said. According to CFTC figures released after the close of business on Friday, speculators (non-commercials and nonreportables) were net long 11,682 lots as December 16, up from a net long position of 7,714 lots two weeks ago. Non-commercials -- or funds and other large speculators -- were net long 7,877 lots as of Dec 16, the CFTC reported. "It showed the funds were still in there and the market is still vunerable to the downside," said another trader. The March contract slipped through nearby chart support at 155 cents and triggered light sell-stops, but a lack of follow-through to the downside spurred local shortcovering, dealerrs said. Light trade and commission house buying late in the session pushed prices towards intraday highs by the close, they said. Some traders said the market may have gotten a bit of support from the USDA's and F.O. Licht's 1997/98 world production estimates. Statistician Licht said on Monday that world coffee production should reach 96.5 million bags in 1997/98 compared with the previous season's figure of 102.8 million bags. Coffee consumption in 1997/98 was put at 102 million bags, compared with 99.8 million in the previous season, Licht said. On Friday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture pegged global coffee production for 1997/98 at 102.6 million 60-kg bags, down from its June forecast of 103.7 million bags. "If the 97/98 estimates would have come out six or seven months ago, they would have been worth 25 cents," said a trader. "They may be a little bullish, but nobody really cares now." Technically, some traders the March contract's close near session highs put the most-active contract in a position to test resistance at 160 cents. On the downside, they continued to peg March support at 153 cents. 231228 MET dec 97
