With many players already sidelined ahead of the Christmas holiday, market participation was light. Prices rose early in the session, buoyed by a smaller-than-expected speculative long position as reported in the latest Commitment of Traders data. But the failure to build on the early gains prompted locals to liquidate longs by the close, traders said. Speculators were net long 81,395 lots as of December 16, the CFTC said after the close of trading on Friday, up to 10,000 lots less than what some traders had anticipated. "The Commitment of Traders was slightly bullish," said one broker. The switches were well offered early in the day, helping to narrow March's premium to deferred positions. Front-month March futures fell 0.05 cent a lb to close at 12.24 cents, having traded from 12.23 to 12.30 cents. Second-position May eased 0.02 cent to 12.03, while the back months finished down 0.02 to up 0.03. Technically, the March contract faced support toward 12.15 cents, and resistance at 12.38 cents.
