Trade buying helped to lift raw sugar prices to the day's highs early in the session. But the market was unable to overcome persistent selling by speculators and failed to fill an important overhead chart gap created late last week. The March contract pierced the bottom edge of a gap at 12.21-12.25 cents, but speculative selling intensified at the highs and sparked a quick reversal. Bellwether March futures rose 0.03 cent a lb to settle at 12.17 cents, after trading from 12.11 to 12.22 cents. Second-position May rose 0.02 to 12.09 cents, while the remaining months were flat to down 0.07. Although today's failure at the highs could send a negative chart signal, sustained industry buying should provide support on the dips, dealers said. "There is tremendous interest from the trade to buy underneath," said one broker. He added that significant offtake was likely to continue from Russia, which has hard-hit by delays and damage to its own harvest. The day's turnover amounted to a light 9,249 lots. 161143 MET dec 97
