"Sugar made good gains on Monday on physical offtake and commercial news, but has been consolidating since, and needs more good news to prompt further gains," said James Cordier, an analyst with Allendale Inc in Florida. "The fundamentals don't look that strong, but the technicals still look good," he said. The CSCE March world sugar contract ended unchanged at 12.38 cents an ounce, after trading a 12.31-12.42 cent range, while the March/May spread was also little changed around 0.08 cents a pound. Estimated total CSCE world sugar volume was around 12,000 lots, compared to Wednesday's cleared volume of 12,665 lots. But open interest rose 3,440 lots Tuesday to 204,294 lots. The March contract's five day moving-average remains above its 21-day average, and above its 55-day average, suggesting the uptrend remains intact, analysts noted. Sugar prices saw a 16 month high Monday, supported by Russian buying. In industry news, Brazil's key port of Santos remained partially paralyzed for the eighth day running on Thursday in its worst strike since 1993, the port authority CODESP said. Only 11 vessels out of the 30 docked at public quays were operating because of a strike by operators demanding access to several new workers' categories. Five vessels were operating normally at private terminals. The 17 vessels paralyzed included seven bagged sugar and seven fertilizer vessels. An additional 46 vessels were waiting in the roads, including 16 fertilizer, 17 container, four bagged sugar, one bulk sugar and one salt. 051100 MET dec 97
