"The sugar market has been consolidating at these higher levels, and there's been some profit taking after good fund buying on Monday, following Russian buying in the physical market," Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson said. "But it's been pretty sleepy today." CSCE March sugar ended down 0.07 cent at 12.38 cents a pound, after trading a 12.45-12.36 cent range. Estimated CSCE world sugar volume was around 11,000 lots, compared to Tuesday's cleared volume of 16,183 lots and Monday's 54,129 lots. Hourly momentum indicators have drited back to neutral levels, but daily oscillators remain positive, and the March contract's five day moving-average has now crossed back above its 21-day average, and remains above its 55-day average, analysts noted. The March/May backwardation slipped a little to 0.08 cent a pound. In industry news, an operator's strike at Brazil's key port of Santos entered its seventh day Wednesday, paralyzing 18 ships and slowing loading and unloading of 11 others, the port authority CODESP said. In other news, Syria's General Trade Organisation for Chemicals and Foodstuffs (GEZA) on Wednesday bought 26,000 tonnes of white sugar at $343.60 a tonne for January delivery, a Geza spokesamn said. He told Reuters the purchase of 26,000 tonnes of raw sugar, which was included in the same tender issued on November 19, was cancelled as price offers were not suitable. 041113 MET dec 97
