LONDON (DOW JONES)--COPPER PRICES WERE LOWER AT THE OFFICIAL CLOSE TUESDAY ON THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE AFTER HITTING A 13-MONTH LOW AT $1,922 A METRIC TON ON A FLURRY OF TRADE-BASED STOP-LOSS SELLING IN THE PRE-MARKET. TRADE BUYING HALTED THE SLIDE AND PRICES EDGED SIDEWAYS IN THE RINGS. BUT FLOOR TRADERS REMAINED EDGY, WITH THE PROSPECT OF MORE SELL ORDERS BEING TRIGGERED IN NEW YORK. ALUMINUM PRICES WERE ALSO LOWER, BUT AN EARLIER BREAK BELOW KEY SUPPORT AT $1,650 DIDN'T DRAW MUCH FRESH SELLING. (LME THREE-MONTHS OFFICIAL PRICE IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON WITH PREVIOUS OFFICIAL CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. NYMEX COPPER AT 1350 GMT IN CENTS A POUND, WITH PREVIOUS CLOSE IN PARENTHESES.) COPPER 1,930.25 (1,955.50) ZINC 1,168 (1,169) ALUMINUM 1,646.75 (1,659.50) TIN 5,572.50(5,597.50) NICKEL 6,167.50 (6,162.50) LEAD 578.50 (575) NYMEX DEC COPPER 87.40 (89.15) 'COPPER'S GOING TO STRUGGLE TO BREAK BACK UP THROUGH $1,950,' SAID THE COPPER FLOOR TRADER FOR A FRENCH-OWNED BROKERAGE, 'IT'S GOT A NEW RANGE NOW - $1,920-$1,950.' HE SAID THERE WERE SELL-STOPS PLACED ABOUT 50 CENTS BELOW THE MARKET ON THE COMEX DIVISION OF THE NEW YORK MERCANTILE EXCHANGE 'WE COULD BE IN FOR A ROUGH RIDE.' COMEX FUTURES OPENED MORE THAN A CENT LOWER. COPPER'S DOWNWARD CORRECTION CAME AS LITTLE SURPRISE, TRADERS SAID. WORRIES OVER FALTERING ASIAN DEMAND, DISAPPOINTING FOURTH QUARTER DEMAND IN EUROPE AND RISING WORLDWIDE PRODUCTION ARE ALL WEIGHING ON SENTIMENT. ALUMINUM PRICES TRACKED SIDEWAYS IN THE RINGS, DESPITE A BREAK LOWER IN THE PRE-MARKET. TRADERS SAID THE ABSENCE OF FUND SELLERS FROM THE MORNING RINGS HAD DELAYED A DIP TO NEXT CHART SUPPORT AT $1,620. 'THE FUNDS ARE LONG AND IT SEEMS THEY'RE CONTENT TO HOLD THEIR POSITIONS AT THIS LEVEL,' SAID A TRADER FOR A U.S.-OWNED BROKERAGE. 181534 MET nov 97
