"After the initial highs and lows were made the market just settled into a range and didn't make any effort to move out of it," a trader said. Trade-house buying of the nearby switch helped to drive the market higher at the opening, and commission-house buying into the rally offered further support. But the market was unable to gather enough steam to challenge its recent contract highs, as a mixture of trade and speculative selling once again capped the uptrend. March futures ended flat at 12.34 cents, having traded from 12.32 to 12.39 cents. Second-position rose 0.01 to 12.29 cents, while the deferreds finished 0.02 to 0.03 cent lower. Technically, raw sugar's continued failure to eclipse contract highs set a few weeks ago could gradually undermine confindence in the market, dealers said. With the expiry of the nearby March contract still months away, commodity funds were under little immediate pressure to relinquish their large long position, and trade-house buying was expected to provide a cushion on the dips. 171043 MET nov 97
