Spread dealings once again dominated market activity, as some operators who had sold the March-May switch on Wednesday returned to buy it today. Some outright commission-house buying was noted early in the session, followed by trade buying of the nearby differential, dealers said. "It was all March-May," said a trader. "If you weren't doing March-May you weren't doing anything." March sugar rose 0.07 cent a lb to 12.34 cents, after trading from 12.28 to 12.38. May gained 0.03 to 12.28, driving the nearby switch out to 0.06 cent a lb from 0.02 on Wednesday. Some traders said the market's early climb was spurred by rumors of fresh offtake in the physical market overnight. In the past few weeks, signs of substantial purchases by Russia have lent support to prices in New York and London. While there was no confirmation of Russian buying, Syria picked up 13,000 tonnes of white sugar at $341.60 a tonne, government officials said. Elsewhere, traders displayed little reaction to the first estimate of the 1997/98 sugar balance by German statistician F.O. Licht. Licht pegged world sugar production in the 1997/98 crop year at 122.7 million tonnes, down slightly from 123.9 tonnes in the previous year. World stocks should fall to 44.7 million tonnes at the end of the crop year, from 42.7 million tonnes in 1996/97, Licht said in a report. Technically, the lifetime high of 12.44 cents remained a crucial objective for the March contract, dealers said. The failure today to eclipse Wednesday's high of 12.41 was slightly negative, but fairly solid support was noted in the 12.20s, traders said. 141105 MET nov 97
