CSCE world sugar finishes lower, led by March
NEW YORK, Nov 12 (Reuters) - CSCE world sugar ended weaker
Wednesday in a session highlighted by renewed speculative
selling of the nearby switch, trading sources said.
Raw sugar prices swept higher at the opening after a
stronger performance in the London whites market overnight. But
scale-up selling by producing countries quashed the rally,
sending the market back toward unchanged.
Once the buying momentum fizzled out, speculators rolled
spot longs into the deferred contracts.
"There is continued pressure on the spot month spread," one
trader said. "You're seeing disgruntled longs jump out of the
market."
Diminished selling of the nearby spread allowed the market
to move broadly higher on Tuesday, but the failure to test the
recent contract highs at the outset this morning cast a pall
over the market, traders said.
Bellwether March futures fell 0.08 cent to 12.27 cents per
lb, after trading form 12.26 to 12.41 cents. Second-month May
fell 0.07 to 12.25, while the remaining positions finished down
0.03 to up 0.02.
Chart watchers said March would need to clear its lifetime
high of 12.44 cents to trigger substantial speculative buying
interest. To the downside, support was noted toward 12.15 cents.
In other developments, the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization said Wednesday that the El Nino weather
phenomenon was not likely to cause a sharp rise in sugar prices
in 1997/98.
In a special report on the impact of El Nino, the FAO said
adequate stocks should protect against a sharp price upturn in
1997/98. But the organization warned that prices could increase
beyond their recent trading range if the effect of El Nino
linger into the 1998/99 production season.
