"For the moment the coffee market is looking a bit better technically and fundamentally, but I wouldnt say anything has really changed," Prudential Securities analyst Arthur Stevenson said. "There were reports yesterday of weather problems in southern Mexcio, the ACPC (Association of Coffee Producing Countries) has lowered its export forecasts, and the Brazilian export figure for October was about 30 percent below year ago levels and these were constructive items," he said. "As a result the market pushed its way up through the recent downtrend line Monday, but today didn't do much, and the December/March spread contracted," he said. "The December expiry may yet produce some volatility though, given the relatively low level of certified stocks." U.S. certified coffee stocks fell 2,217 bags to 22,301 bags, as of November 7, the CSCE said late Monday. CSCE December coffee ended down 0.60 cent at 156.25, after trading a 151.50-158.75 range. The December/March spread narrowed to 9.80 cents a pound, after widening to 11.75 cents Monday. But with December coffee's first notice day looming Thursday next week, March is now the more active contract, with more open interest. The March contract ended up 1.60 cent at 146.45 a pound. In London January robusta coffee ended higher. Daily momentum oscillators have turned positive again for the March contract, following Monday's breakout to three-week highs, and the five-day moving average Tuesday crossed above its 21-day moving average for the first time in two months, analysts noted. In industry news Tuesday, statistician F.O. Licht said its first estimate of 1997/98 world coffee production was 98.80 million bags, compared with 1996-97 production of 102.43 million bags. Licht said world arabica production would total 64.58 million bags, compared with 66.65 million in the previous year. World production of robustas would fall to 34.22 million bags in 1997/98, compared with 35.78 million in 1996/97. Many of the world's most important producers are likely to be affected by the El Nino phenomenon, Licht said. In addition, German trader Bernhard Rothos GmbH said global coffee output in 1997/98 is forecast at 98.5 million bags, rounded, compared with a revised estimate of 100.2 million bags for 1996/97, figures from The forecast was down from 100.0 million envisaged for 1997/98 in the previous estimate in August. The figures were based on private and public sector sources estimates and applied to 60-kilo bags on an Oct/Sept basis. Rothfos said the lower figure reflected reductions in Brazil, Indonesia and Kenya, among others, while Vietnam's crop should rise. The new 1996/97 estimate was up from 99.3 million projected for that crop year in August, due to an increase in Colombia. 121128 MET nov 97
