News the Association of Coffee Producing Countries (ACPC) said coffee exports by its members in 1997-98 (July-June) would be 3.85 million bags below the planned level of 52.75 million bags was supportive, traders said. "The ACPC was only confirming what everybody had known for sometime," Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. "It was not a great season for the coffee crop and there have been questions about the size of the crop for some time due to the weather and the El Nino effect," he said. "The world supply/demand balance is about even, but the market may have overdiscounted supplies and open interest in the December contract is still above 8,000 contracts while deliverable CSCE supplies are low, so December coffee may trade back up near 160-170 cents before long," he added. CSCE December coffee ended up 7.05 cents at 156.85 cents a lb after trading from 150.50 to 158.00 cents. Estimated volume was high at 9,567 lots. Daily momentum oscillators for December coffee suggest the downtrend in prices may be ending, but December coffee's five-day (weekly) moving-average remains below both its 21-day (monthly) and 55-day (quarterly) average, analysts noted. The December/March backwardation widened to close at 11.75 cents, from 8.95 cents at Friday's close, but the nearby/next spread has been declining erratically since peaking at 41.00 cents in May this year. CSCE coffee open interest fell 1,408 lots Friday to 24,819 contracts, with the December contract's open interest falling 1,804 lots to 8,797 contracts ahead of December's first notice day on Thursday next week. In CFTC Commitments of Traders data, released late Friday, net short positions of funds in CSCE coffee stood at 2,903 lots on Nov 4 compared to 2,216 lots two weeks earlier. In industry news, Association of Coffee Producing Countries (ACPC) said coffee exports by its members in 1997-98 would be 3.85 million bags below the planned level of 52.75 million bags. ACPC president Rubens Barbosa of Brazil told reporters that the reduction in expected availability was in particular due to the adverse effect of recent weather patterns, including the El Nino phenomenon. In addition, Brazil also declared that it expects to export no more than 13 million bags of green coffee, a reduction of two million bags. But ACPC officials reiterated there was no change in the group's export quota limit of 52.75 million bags this season. Meanwhile, customs workers launched a nationwide go-slow at Colombia's airports, sea ports and key border crossing points Monday but reports of the immediate effects were mixed. Trucks trying to enter northeast Colombia from Venezuela were reported backed up for several miles. But in the Pacific port of Buenaventura -- transit point for 60 percent of the nation's key coffee exports -- operations were said to be near normal. 111103 MET nov 97
