Front-month March futures slumped 0.07 cent a lb on the day, to close at 12.18, after trading from 12.27 to 12.16. Second-position May eased 0.01 cent to 12.18, while the remaining months finished unchanged to down 0.01 cent. Dealers said a move by speculators to roll nearby long positions forward weighed heavily on the spot contract. With the open interest position on March topping 120,000 lots, long holders have grown increasingly nervous in the past few days that the market appeared overbought. "The open interest makes it vulnerable to a correction," said one trader. But scale-down buying from the trade continued to provide a buffer, he added, helping March to avert a test of key chart support at 12.15 cents. Commitment of Traders data released after the close of business on Friday showed showed speculators (non-commercial plus non-reportable positions) to be long a hefty 103,215 lots as of November 4. Traders said that while the report contained few surprises, it served to remind the market that commodity funds had liquidated few of the longs they took on during the market's recent climb to new contract highs.
