With no new fundamentals to inspire the market, many operators stayed on the sidelines. Light speculative selling weighed on prices from the outset, but scale-down buying from both commodity funds and the trade provided support. The bellwether March contract eased 0.07 cent a lb to close at 12.25 cents, after trading from 12.22 to 12.30. Second-position May eased 0.04 cent to 12.17, and the remaining months were unchanged to down 0.03. Traders remained divided on whether the market would be able to hold near contract highs reached late last week. Views that the recent run-up had been overdone made many potential buyers wary, but others said that with March delivery still months away, commodity funds felt little pressure to relinquish their long position. Technically, light support was seen at 12.20 cents, with a more significant objective at 12.15 basis the March contract. Resistance was pegged at 12.30-12.32 cents, a small gap created at today's opening, followed by the contract high of 12.44.
