"The funds were good buyers here today, and their buying was primarily in the March and May positions," noted one trader. Selling by trade houses and producers capped the upside momentum, he added. Front-month March gained 0.04 cent a lb to close at 12.43 cents, after trading from 12.28 cents to 12.44 cents, matching a contract high set on Friday. Second-position May rose 0.03 cent to 12.31, while the outer months ended between 0.01 and 0.02 cent lower. Many traders said the market appeared overbought in the near term after rising more than five percent in the span of a week. But as long as March hovered near life-of-contract highs, commodity funds would be reluctant to relinquish long positions, they said. Open interest on sugar No. 11 rose by more than 10,000 lots during last Friday's session, to a total of 188,548 lots, just off a record high set in September of more than 205,000 lots. On the charts, 12.50 cents was viewed as a major upside hurdle basis the March contract. Support was noted at 12.15 cents, the March's previous high before last week's breakout. Further support was seen from 12.05-11.90 cents. Volume remained steady, at an estimated 23,895 lots, but well off Friday's official tally of 39,063 lots. 041104 MET nov 97
