Fueled by yesterday's rally to the highest level in more than a year, raw sugar prices headed higher from the opening bell Friday. Commodity funds bought the market steadily throughout the session, while producer countries sold into the rally at every point, traders said. "The funds bought another 10,000 lots, and producers priced another 10,000 lots," said one trader. The key March sugar contract gained 0.09 cent a lb to 12.39 cents, after climbing to a fresh contract high of 12.44 cents. Second-month may gained 0.10 cent to 12.28 cents, while the remaining months finished between 0.01 and 0.07 higher. Turnover was heavy, reaching an estimated 39,366 lots by the close. March futures climbed 0.58 cent, or five percent, on the week. While there were few new fundamentals behind the steep rally, traders said concern that cold weather would damage the Russian beet crop gave the market a solid underpinning. Dealers also noted the market's significant technical progress during week, with key resistance levels breached at 12.00 and 12.19 cents. But some operators cautioned that the market appeared substantially overbought in the near term, paving the way for a bout of profit-taking early next week. On the charts, immediate support was seen at today's low of 12.30 cents, followed by 12.20 and 11.90. Dealers pegged resistance at 12.50 cents. The options market was also heavily traded Friday, with 10,091 calls and 4,764 puts changing hands. Dealers noted brisk selling of out-of-the-money calls at 12.50 and 13.00 cents. 031129 MET nov 97
