Bellwether March futures rose 0.22 cent a lb to 12.00 cents, the highest settlement since September 12. The contract climbed to an intraday high of 12.08 cents, filling a key chart gap 12.03-12.07 cents, before the buying momentum faded. Trade-house buying drove the March contract through resistance at 11.95 cents early in the session, sending a strong buy signal to commodity funds. Speculators were heavy buyers for the remainder of the session, though aggressive selling by producer countries slowed the advance. Dealers said the run-up was largely technically motivated. "There was no fundamental news, it was just testing the higher end of the range," said one trader. The day's strong performance left the March contract within striking distance of the recent top of 12.15 cents, followed by the life-of-contract high of 12.19 cents, dealers said. "The funds still have a lot of amunition," the trader said. "It definitely has the potential to keep going higher." But any upside bid was likely to continue to encounter heavy selling from producers and the trade, dealers said. Second-position May rose 0.19 cent to close at 11.95 cents, while the distant months rose between 0.16 and 0.06 cent. The switches were well bid on the day, boosting the spot premium to 0.05 cent a lb, up from 0.02 cent at Tuesday's close. Volume on the day was heavy, reaching an estimated 42,683 lots. 301050 MET oct 97
