As of 1217 EST, March futures stood down 0.08 cent at 11.81 cents a lb, toward the middle of the day's 11.75 to 11.94 trading range. Second-position May also traded at 11.81 cents, off 0.05 cent from the previous close. Taking its cue from strong finish at yesterday's close, the raw sugar market rallied at the opening Tuesday. Steady speculative bidding drove the March contract to a high of 11.94 cents, one point shy of a minor resistance target. But as expected, producer-linked selling quickly emerged to pare the gains. The market drifted into negative territory by mid-morning, when scale-down trade buying provided some support. "It ran up on speculative buying, but it backed off pretty quickly," said one dealer. "Once you get up to 11.90, you run into producer selling and that puts a cap on the rally." Traders said sell stops were well-placed beneath 11.71 cents for March, a recent double bottom on the charts. By midday, an estimated 17,699 lots had changed hands, though floor traders said activity had slowed considerably in the last hour. 291124 MET oct 97
