CSCE coffee ends flat to firmer in dull trading
NEW YORK, Oct 27 (Reuters) - CSCE coffee futures ended
unchanged to firmer in lackluster trading on Monday, but the
December contract stayed within a recent tight band between 148
and 156 cents per lb.
December arabicas rose 0.70 cent on the day, to 153.60
cents, after ranging from 155.50 to 151.25 cents. Second-month
March ended 0.30 cent firmer at 142.95 cents, while the rest of
the board closed flat to up 0.75 cent.
The nearby December/March switch widened slightly to 10.65
cents from 10.25 cents at the close on Friday.
With little in the way of fresh fundamental to trade on,
dealers said much of the recent activity has been technically
driven. Local long liquidation pushed prices lower in early
going, but the December contract's inability to get through
chart support at 150 cents sparked a bout of short-covering by
day traders, they said.
Overhead pressure from origin capped gains, keeping December
beneath the 156-cent resistance level and prompting a bout of
light local selling, traders said.
On the charts, December is likely to continue to find chart
resistance at 155-156 cents, followed by 158-160 cents. Support
was pegged at 150 cents and then 148 cents.
Market participants are split on which direction prices are
likely to take in the near-term. Some traders said a pick up in
the flow of new crop coffee from Latin America would keep the
market under pressure and relieve supply concerns, while other
traders reckon stepped up demand from roasters going into the
peak consumption season and low levels of exchange-certified
stocks could give arabica futures a boost.
"Coffee's coming and source wants to sell," said one trader.
"But roasting will be picking up -- it's been cold."
After Monday's close, CSCE reported certified coffee stocks
rose by 862 60-kg bags as of October 24, to 27,309 bags. An
additional 1,100 bags of coffee were pending grading, the
exchange said.
Volume reached an estimated 5,257 lots.
