"There's no turnover, no range, it's just steady," said one trader. "Prices have reached an equilibrium where people are content to do nothing." Benchmark December arabicas were unchanged on the day, at 150.20 cents per lb, after ranging from 152.50 to 149.75 cents. Second-month March finished 0.50 cent weaker at 140.00 cents, while the rest of the board closed down 1.00 to up 0.50 cent. The nearby December/March switch widened to 10.20 cents from 9.70 cents at the close on Tuesday. Arabica prices headed higher at the opening, bolstered by commission house buying on the heels of strong gains on the London robusta market, traders said. But scale-up origin selling capped gains, they said, preventing a test of nearby resistance at 153.00 cents in December and spurring some local selling. News on Wednesday that Colombia's main truck drivers' union will "temporarily" lift its four-day-old nationwide strike also prompted some selling, but failed to inspire enough downward momentum to push December through 148.00 cents support, traders said. "There was a light reaction to the Colombian news," said a trader. "But support is still there." The move by the Colombian Truck Drivers' Association (ACC) was taken to ease tension ahead of this weekend's local elections. Union leaders said it would allow police chiefs to divert men away from highway patrol activities and concentrate on maintaining law and order in the face of leftist guerrilla threats to sabotage the ballot. "We're going to temporarily lift our strike from midday Wednesday because of the electoral period," Olga Roseros, chairman of the ACC told Reuters. "But we will be fixing the date for a new strike since none of our original demands have yet been satisfied." Technically, traders continued to peg near-term support in December at 148.00 cents, followed by a strong downside target at 145-144 cents. Resistance was still seen near 153 cents, then 155-156 cents, they said. Some traders said today's relatively weak finish could inspire locals to test the downside on Thursday. "Today's close may have left a feeling that the market has no strength," another trader said. "But it could stay sideways for awhile until someone with weight comes in and gives this market some direction." After Wednesday's close, CSCE reported certified coffee stocks rose by four 60-kg bags as of October 21, to 25,447 bags. An additional 3,250 bags of coffee pending grading, the exchange said. Turnover was thin, at an estimated 4,240 lots. 231134 MET oct 97
