December arabicas fell 6.95 cents a lb on the day, to 150.30 cents, its lowest settlement since July 21 and toward the bottom of its 158.50-149.50 range. Second-month March finished 4.15 cents lower at 140.00 cents, narrowing the nearby December/March switch to 10.30 cents from 13.10 cents at the close on Thursday. Traders said today's activity was mainly chart-driven, with the market's finish toward session lows on Thursday viewed as technically bearish. While no fresh fundamental news was blamed for the two-day sell-off, traders and analysts said the prospect of new-crop coffee coming to market in the next few weeks has dampened sentiment and relieved any lingering supply concerns. "New-crop coffee is not only coming, but its coming early as far as some Central American countries are concerned," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "The early coffee helps bridge the gap in roasters' needs and takes away any tightness relative to certified stocks. "Moreover, if you look at the tail end of the Colombian crop, it was terrific compared to early expectations," she said. Additionally, traders noted recent losses in the face of what many considered bullish fundamentals intensified the negative tone. Traders in New York brushed aside news that Colombia's main truck drivers union will launch an indefinite nation-wide strike at 0500 GMT Saturday. A union leader estimated an indefinite strike by Colombia's truckers would paralyze the transport of between 3,300 and 5,000 60-kg bags of coffee per day. Traders were also unfazed by a drawdown in U.S. consumer coffee inventories during September and the steady decline in CSCE certified coffee stockpiles. "People have been saying, tight stocks, tight stocks, tight stocks," said one broker. "Well, guess what? The crop is here." "The psychology has changed and specs are happy to go short," he added. "There's no roaster opposition and so who's going to oppose the specs? The farmers? I don't think so." Traders said the increase in open interest on Thursday was proof some market participants were not just liquidating long positions, but going on the short side. Total open interest as of October 16 rose by 377 lots, to 24,652 lots. Technically, traders said December's settlement near the low could prompt some follow-through selling on Monday. They said the next support level for the spot contract would be near 148.00 cents, followed by 145.50-144.00 cents. But with December losing 15.75 cents -- or more than nine percent -- in the last two consecutive sessions, some traders said the market may be due for a technical bounce. After Friday's close, CSCE reported certified coffee stocks were unchanged as of October 16, at 32,207 60-kg bags. An additional 500 bags of coffee pending grading, the exchange said. CSCE also reported 1,499 bags were graded and 1,499 bags passed exchange approval. Volume was brisk at an estimated 12,420 lots. 201027 MET oct 97
