"Brazil continues to be the dominant sugar producer and exporter, while another bearish development has been the ongoing improvement in the European beet crop with the growing season one of the best in recent years," Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. Nearby active CSCE March sugar ended down 0.10 cent at 11.68 cents, ending at its lowest levels this month. The March/May contango edged out to 0.06 cent. CSCE sugar volume was 14,016 lots. CSCE sugar prices rallied in late September and early October to their highest levels in a year on fears the El Nino weather pattern would take its toll on the Thai crop, and on concerns about a supply/demand deficit which would draw down high world sugar stocks this year. But near ideal growing conditions in Europe and data showing Brazilian sugar exports were running 29 pct ahead of last year year-to-date have assuaged fears of any market tightness, analysts said. "Producers are apparently having difficulties getting rid of their surplus sugar and sales of Western hemisphere, notably Guatemalan, raws into the Far East are forcing down Thai premiums," industry consultants F.O. Licht said this week. "North Brazilian producers are also struggling to find outlets for a huge crop," F.O. Licht said. "They have found few buyers at recent tenders and are becoming increasingly desperate with their stores filling up." 201026 MET oct 97
