LONDON (DOW JONES)--BASE METAL PRICES AT THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE WERE MOSTLY HIGHER IN PRE-MARKET TRADING FRIDAY, WITH ALUMINUM PRICES UP AFTER A DECLINE IN LME STOCKS, WHILE COPPER AND NICKEL GAINED SOME GROUND IN THE WAKE OF NEWS THURSDAY OF PLANNED SMELTER CUT-BACKS AT RUSSIA'S RAO NORILSK NICKEL, SAID TRADERS. ZINC AND TIN PROVED TO BE THE EXCEPTIONS, WITH ZINC PRICES DOWN $14 AT $1,294 A TON AFTER SPECULATIVE SELL-STOPS WERE TRIGGERED BELOW INITIAL SUPPORT AT $1,300, SAID TRADERS. (LME THREE-MONTH PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1040 GMT, WITH THURSDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. THURSDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS PER POUND.) CHINESE SHORTS HAVE BEEN DELIVERING ZINC TO LME WAREHOUSES IN THE WAKE OF AN ABORTIVE SQUEEZE ON ZINC SUPPLY BY SPECULATORS, THEY SAID. 'ZINC STOCKS HAVE INCREASED A LOT OVER THE LAST MONTH AFTER THE ATTEMPTED SQUEEZE,' SAID ROBIN BHAR, METALS ANALYSTS AT BRANDEIS (BROKERS) LTD.. UNDERPINNING THE COPPER PRICE WAS A CUMULATIVE STOCK DECLINE THIS WEEK OF 2,080 TONS TO 338,625, SAID TRADERS. 'COPPER CONTINUES TO SEE SUPPORT AT $2,100 WITH DECEMBER TO THREE'S (THE DEC/JAN SPREAD) IN BACKWARDATION BECAUSE THE SO-CALLED MATING SEASON HAS STARTED WHEN TRADERS START MATCHING UP CONTRACTS FOR NEXT YEAR,' SAID A TRADER FROM A EUROPEAN TRADE HOUSE. BOTH COPPER AND NICKEL PRICES GAINED SUPPORT FROM NEWS THURSDAY THAT RUSSIA'S RAO NORILSK NICKEL PLANS A 5 TO 6 MONTH SHUT-DOWN OF TWO FURNACES AT ITS NADEZHDA SMELTER FOR REPAIRS STARTING LATE NOVEMBER, SAID TRADERS.
