Benchmark December arabicas fell 0.35 cent a lb on the day, to 166.05 cents, after ranging from 169.50 to 164.50 cents. Second-month March closed 0.05 cent firmer at 150.25 cents, while the forward months ended up 1.25 to down 0.25. The December/March switch narrowed to 15.80 cents compared with 16.20 cents at the close on Tuesday. Traders said activity was relatively subdued ahead of the Green Coffee Association of New York's monthly stock data slated for release after today's close at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT. "It was quiet," said one trader. "We're just waiting to get those GCA numbers out of the way." Most traders anticipated stocks in September would decrease between 100,000 and 200,000 60-kg bags from 2,583,000 bags in August. However, estimates have ranged widely from a modest increase of some 15,000 bags to a drop of 300,000 bags. Some traders said expectations of a decline in GCA stocks and the continued drop in exchange-certified stocks underpinned prices. The CSCE reported on Tuesday certified coffee stocks fell for the 16th day in a row. Stocks dropped by 1,618 60-kg bags as of October 13, to 39,219 bags. An additional 1,499 bags of coffee pending grading in New Orleans, the exchange said. Traders are also keeping an eye on Colombia, where the main truck drivers union on Wednesday said it would launch a nationwide strike beginning Friday. Olga Rosero, chairman of the Association of Colombia Truck Drivers (ACC), said the strike was to protest the failure of the government and freight companies to honor a year-old accord to raise transport rates and improve conditions. Colombia, the world's second largest producer of coffee behind Brazil, is expected to begin shipping some of its new-crop coffee in late October. Volume was moderate at an estimated 6,162 lots, traders said. 161130 MET oct 97
