The benchmark December contract seesawed on both sides of unchanged during the session, but failed to generate enough momentum in either direction to break out of its recent 160.00-170.00 cents a lb trading range. December arabicas fell 1.50 on the day to 166.40 after ranging from 169.75 to 163.25. Second-month March closed 1.85 lower at 150.20 while the forward months ended down 2.00 to 2.75 cents. The December/March switch widened to 16.20 cents compared with 15.85 cents at the close on Monday. Some traders said the nearby switch, a barometer of short-term availability, was buoyed by the continued drawdown in exchange-certified stockpiles and expectations the monthly Green Coffee Association stock report would show a decline in U.S. inventories during September. Most traders expect stocks in September to decrease between 100,000 and 200,000 60-kg bags from 2,583,000 bags in August, although estimates have ranged widely from a modest increase of some 15,000 bags to a drop of 300,000 bags. "I think a decline in stocks is in the market," said one trader. "It's expected to be down at this time of year anyway and the market hasn't really moved on those expectations." In September 1996, GCA stocks fell 205,000 bags from the previous month to 1,611,000 bags. GCA is slated to release the September stock figures on Wednesday at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT. Meanwhile, the CSCE reported after Tuesday's close that certified coffee stocks fell for the 16th day in a row. Stocks dropped by 1,618 60-kg bags as of October 13, to 39,219 bags. There were an additional 1,499 bags of coffee pending grading in New Orleans, the exchange said. Since certifieds last posted an increase on September 19 to 107,325 bags, CSCE stockpiles have been reduced by more than 60 percent. "Certs are keeping the market steady," said another trader. "But I think people still believe a lot of new-crop coffee will be coming in one month's time." Technically, December support was pegged at 162.00-161.50 cents, while resistance was seen near 170.00 cents. An estimated 6,593 lots changed hands on the day. 151056 MET oct 97
