'THERE WAS A BIT OF CASH BUYING ON THE RING AND THIS EVENTUALLY SPARKED OFF SOME SHORT-COVERING,' HE SAID. A FURTHER DECLINE IN LME COPPER STOCKS TUESDAY, AFTER THE FIRST DRAW-DOWN IN WEEKS MONDAY, MAY HAVE HELPED TRIGGER THE RALLY, SAID TRADERS. LME COPPER STOCKS DROPPED 2,075 TONS TO 337,900 TONS, TUESDAY. NICKEL EDGED SLIGHTLY LOWER IN RING TRADING AS LIGHT FUND SELLING ENTERED THE MARKET. 'THE FUNDS TRIED TO PUSH NICKEL DOWN TO $6,350-$6,400 BUT THE TRADE WEREN'T GOING TO WAIT UNTIL IT GOT DOWN THERE (TO BUY IT),' SAID ANOTHER TRADER FROM A EUROPEAN TRADE HOUSE. THERE APPEARED TO BE LITTLE CONCERN ON THE TRADING FLOOR ABOUT RUMORS MONDAY OF SMELTER PROBLEMS AT RUSSIA'S RAO NORILSK. NORILSK HAVE DECLINED TO COMMENT ON THE RUMOR. ZINC RECOVERED SOME GROUND LOST EARLIER TUESDAY, RISING $8 TO $1,315.50 DURING RING TRADING, IN SPITE OF A SHARP RISE IN STOCKS TUESDAY. ALUMINUM PRICES 14/10 CONTINUED TO DRIFT LOWER IN THE RING FROM LATE KERB TRADING, MONDAY. LME ZINC STOCKS WERE UP 6,075 TONS AT 450,575 TONS, TUESDAY. 141537 MET oct 97
