After an early test of the downside, fund buying propped the market above unchanged for the remainder of the day. Producer-led selling again slowed the upward momentum, however. "There was fairly decent trade selling in the 11.80s (basis March) and it probably doubled or tripled toward 11.90," said one trader. March futures rose 0.11 cent a lb to 11.90, toward the top of the day's 11.72-11.91 range. May finished up 0.08 cent at 11.90, and the rest of the board climbed between 0.08 and 0.10 cent. An estimated 16,423 lots were exchanged. Technically, dealers said the market had room to work its way higher, but would encounter stiff resistance between 12.01 and 12.07 cents, a chart gap left over from last month. Scale-down trade buying was expected to provide support in the low 11.70s basis March. Otherwise, the market displayed little reaction to this week's European Union white sugar tender. A hefty 163,325 tonnes were awarded, bringing this year's cumulative total to 717,825 tonnes, up 23 percent on the year. 091148 MET oct 97
