"New York coffee futures may continue to trend a bit lower, as the weather in Brazil at least has been relatively unaffected by El Nino and is running true to seasonal patterns, with rain coming only after the harvest, auguring well for the crops," Smith Barney analyst Walter Spilka said. "But after rising since last November, CSCE coffee stocks have been falling again recently, and not much more coffee is expected until November," Spilka said. CSCE December coffee ended down 1.30 cents at 161.05 cents a lb after trading from 164.50 to 159.25 cents. The December/March spread was slightly firmer around 11.25 cents, up from 10.45 cents at the previous close. CSCE reported late Wednesday that certified coffee stocks fell 1,091 60-kg bags as of Sept 30 to 92,634 bags. There were an additional 1,541 bags of coffee pending grading. But the focus for CSCE traded arabica coffee's remained on the likely size of the crops in Brazil and Colombia, the world's largest and second largest producers respectively. USDA has forecast the 1997-98 Brazilian crop at 28 million bags, but local Brazilian estimates range down to only 22 million bags, in line with the 1996-97 crop. And month the Brazil National Coffee Council reported farm co-operatives in August had stocks of only 2.59 million bags, up from 1.77 million in July, but down from 3.87 million bags in August last year. Colombian National Coffee Federation recently forecast their 1997/98 crop at 12 million bags, up from 10.6 million last year. But the Federation's inventory of coffee continues to decline and at the end of August was 4.55 million bags, down from 4.60 million bags at the end of July. 031120 MET oct 97
