In a session dominated by day traders, dealers said an early test of December resistance at 165.00 cents per lb was rebuffed by light producer selling. A push to the downside fell short of 160.00 cents support as trade buying emerged at the lows, they said. "It could not pick up momentum one way or the other," said one trader, "and we just landed in the middle." December arabicas ended 0.15 cent weaker, at 162.35 cents, after ranging narrowly from 164.90 to 161.25 cents. Second-month March rose 0.50 cent to 151.90 cents, while the forward contracts closed up 0.40 to down 0.10 cent. The December/March switch shrunk to 10.45 cents compared with 11.10 cents at the close on Tuesday. Some traders said the prospect of more coffee coming to market as the new-crop harvest of many Latin American producing countries gets underway and expectations for a large crop next season in top-grower Brazil continued to limit the market's upside potential. "The fact that origins are coming toward harvest and there will be more availability makes it very difficult now to take the market substantially higher," said a trader. "Then we have next season's crop." The trader also noted, however, low stock levels in both consuming and producing countries would continue to lend underlying support. Technically, traders said December continued to face support at 160.00 cents, with the subsequent levels at 158.00-157.00 cents and then 154.50 cents. On the upside, resistance was still seen at 165.00 cents, followed by 168.00 cents. After Wednesday's close, CSCE reported that certified coffee stocks fell by 1,091 60-kg bags as of September 30, to 92,634 bags. There were an additional 1,541 bags of coffee pending grading, the exchange said. Turnover on Wednesday was thin, at an estimated 4,581 lots. 021103 MET oct 97
