"There nothing fundamentally different, the technicals are driving it one way and another," said one trader. "It failed on the upside -- they thought December could go up to 175.00 (cents per lb) -- but it didn't make it and it came off." Local and commission house buying lifted December arabicas through chart resistance at 168.00 cents to a session high of 172.50 cents before upward momentum ran out of steam and December reversed 12 cents, traders said. At the close, December stood at 160.75, down 4.85 cents and just above the day's low of 160.50 cents. Second-month March ended 4.20 cents lower at 149.80 cents, while the forward contracts fell 3.10 to 3.75 cents. The December/March switch narrowed to 10.95 cents compared with 11.60 cents at the close on Friday. While no market-moving news emerged today, some traders and analysts said favorable weather for the Brazilian flowering and expectations for a large 1998/99 crop in top-grower Brazil weighed on sentiment. In its daily update on Monday, U.S.-based Weather Services Corp reported scattered showers of 0.10 to 0.50 inch (2-12 mm) fell in Brazil's coffee belt over the weekend and forecast more showers later this week. Extremely hot and dry weather in Brazil earlier this month sparked concerns the crucial flowering period would be adversely impacted. Timely and abundant rainfall is essential at this time of year to ensure flowerings for the new coffee crop. "There was the perception that because of dry weather, the next crop in Brazil would be reduced," said Smith Barney analyst Walt Spilka. "Now that perception has changed." With December taking out 165.00 cents chart support, traders said the next downside objective was 160.00 cents followed by 158.00-157.00 cents and then 155.00 cents. On the upside, resistance was seen near 165.00 cents, they said. After Monday's close, CSCE reported that certified coffee stocks fell by 3,379 60-kg bags as of September 26, to 99,252 bags. No coffee was pending grading, the exchange said. Traders said volume on Monday reached some 9,000 lots. 301117 MET sep 97
