Long liquidation of spot positions once again carried the day, as speculators rushed to unload positions before the contract goes off the boards next Tuesday. A sharp upturn in the open interest for most-active March also weighed on the market, traders said, since it suggested that speculators may have begun to take on new short positions. March's open position climbed nearly 4,000 lots during yesterday's session, to some 90,000 lots, even as the contract fell 0.15 cent on the day. March fell 0.08 cent a lb Thursday, to 11.33 cents, having traded from 11.26 to 11.44. October slid 0.15 cent to 10.61, while the outer months eased between 0.04 and 0.08 cent. While the market had taken on an increasingly bearish tone over the past few days, dealers said its relatively gradual decline reflected solid trade-linked support. Unless physical demand picked up, however, March was likely to challenge a key support area in the 11.20-11.00 area in the coming days. "The market is still very oversold, but fundamentally it doesn't seem to be attracting any interest," one trader said. This week's sharp decline on London white sugar reinforced the bearish tone, he added. White sugar prices on Thursday slumped to their lowest levels since January, hurt by prospects for a bumper European crop and plans for large export sales by the European Union. Elsewhere, Iran reportedly purchased 30,000 tonnes of raw sugar for $277 a tonne C&F for November shipment, European traders said. 261101 MET sep 97
