They said local and commission house selling drove most-active December arabicas to a low of 165.50 cents per lb, but roaster price-fixing stemmed the downslide and prevented a breach of key chart support at 165.00 cents, prompting locals to cover their short positions. "They tried to break the market but it found some support," said one trader. "People got panicky and they covered." December coffee fell 1.50 cents on the day, to 168.85 cents, after ranging from 173.00 to 165.50 cents. Second-month March ended 0.90 cent weaker, at 156.90 cents, while the forward contracts finished down 0.25 to up 1.25 cents. The December/March switch narrowed to 11.65 cents compared with 12.55 cents at the close on Monday. Some traders said an increase in CSCE certified stocks on Monday may have dampened sentiment and kept the nearby switch under pressure. After Monday's close, CSCE reported that certified coffee stocks rose by 6,001 60-kg bags as of September 19, to 107,325 bags. An additional 750 bags were pending grading. They also said forecasts calling for more rainfall this week in top-grower Brazil added to the bearish tone. "Brazil has had good rain for this time of year and more is forecast," said a trader. "A big flowering in Brazil will keep a lid on this market." Private U.S. forecaster Weather Services Corp said in its daily update on Tuesday that Brazil's coffee belt was expected to see increasing clouds Wednesday, with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing. WSC said episodes of scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast Thursday into Friday, with rainfall totals of 0.25 to 1.00 inch (5-25 mm) expected. "Recent rain and forecast rain will set off the major flowering period of the trees in the coming weeks under generally favorable conditions," WSC said in its daily update on Tuesday. Traders said a decision by the Association of Coffee Producing Countries to extend current quotas of 52.75 million 60-kg bags to June 1999 had little impact on today's market. "The ACPC news is not a surprise," said one trader. "And it really doesn't matter that much because they have no mechanism to enforce it." Technically, traders said December would continue to face support at 165.00 cents, with the next downside target at 160.00-159.00 cents. Resistance was seen near today's high of 173.00 cents. 241044 MET sep 97
