Traders said persistent speculative liquidation of the spot contract ahead of its expiry next week cast a bearish tone on the overall market, prompting long holders to sell into the day's early rally. But trade buying once again slowed the downturn. "It's very oversold, but most of the pressure is coming from October, which is keeping the rest of the board down," one trader said. Most-active March eased 0.01 cent a lb to end at 11.56 cents, after ranging narrowly from 11.55 to 11.67. Nearby October fell 0.07 cent to 10.98, widening the nearby switch to 0.58 cent, from 0.52 cent on Monday. The absence of significant physical offtake was gradually driving the market down from contract highs set in August, tradres said. But over the longer term, forecasts for a world supply deficit and worries about the potential impact of the El Nino weather phenomenon made speculators reluctant to put too much pressure on the back months.
