While there have been few new fundamentals to influence the market, traders said the gradual downtrend in the past week was beginning to wear away at the market's technical stance. The March contract has closed lower in each of the past six sessions. "There was scale-down trade support, but there was good fund selling on both October and March," said one trader. On Friday, March fell 0.09 cent, to 11.61 cents, its weakest settlement since mid-July. Trades were posted from 11.60 to 11.70. Spot October futures slipped 0.05 cent a lb, to end at 11.17 cents, while the distant months eased 0.05 to 0.08 cent. The day's turnover was fairly brisk, at an estimated 29,887 lots. Traders said an absence of steady physical offtake, along with the speculators' hefty long position, made it difficult for the market to return to contract highs set in late August. Technically, a close below 11.60 cents basis March was likely to spur a new wave of long liquidation, dealers said.
