CSCE coffee ends lower, short-term specs sell
NEW YORK, Sept 18 (Reuter) - CSCE coffee futures closed
lower on Thursday, pressured by chart-driven local and
commission house selling, market sources said.
"The market was very technically oriented," said one trader,
"and dominated by locals and commission houses."
The downturn was led by a sharp drop in the expiring
September contract. Spot September, which went off the board at
1230 EDT today, slid 16.25 cents per lb to 177.75 cents --
helping to drag the rest of the contracts lower.
"There was last minute trading in September, baling out,"
said the trader. "It had an impact but the market was not
holding well all day. It seems to have a problem lately holding
momentum on the upside."
Benchmark December arabicas fell to a three-week low of
166.50 cents before a bout of local short-covering trimmed
losses. December finished at 169.65 cents, down 3.80 cents and
well off the high of 173.50 cents.
The forward contracts closed down 2.25 to 4.20 cents.
Traders said last-second rolling forward of Septembers into
December shrunk the September/December switch to 8.10 cents
compared with 20.55 cents at the close on Wednesday.
December/March 1998 widened to 13.35 cents versus 12.95 cents
the previous session.
December arabicas slumped from the opening on Thursday, as
the market eased following Wednesday's strong close. Traders
noted some selling above 170.00 cents by producers -- most
notably Colombia.
Private exporters in Colombia said Thursday the National
Coffee Growers' Federation will close registrations for private
coffee exports in September as of Friday.
The exporters also said they doubted the federation would
move to lower the $0.30 quality premium on Colombian coffee.
U.S. traders said there had been rumors Colombia would cut the
premium by 10-15 cents next week.
Some New York traders said the prospect of rains in
top-grower Brazil may have weighed on sentiment. Recent hot, dry
weather in Brazil ahead of the critical flowering period has
caused concerns of late and provided underlying support, they
said.
Weather Services Corp said in its daily update on Thursday
there was a slight chance of showers in the next 24 hours in
Brazil's coffee belt. There is a better chance of rainfall later
Friday and into Saturday, with some isolated heavy rains
forecast. Temperatures during this time will trend cooler, WSC
said.
Traders ignored friendly news from the 18th Latin American
Coffee Symposium in Costa Rica. Senior economist with the
International Coffee Organization (ICO), Denis Seudieu, said the
growth in the specialty coffee sector in the United States is
now affecting overall consumption.
"Whereas consumption declined from 21.9 million to 17.5
million (60-kg) bags from 1965 to 1995, a growth rate of one
percent per a year from 1995 to 2000 should lead to consumption
reaching some 18.4 million bags by the latter year, with the
value of the specialty sector exceeding $3 billion," Seudieu
said.
Technically, traders said December faced support near 165.00
cents, while resistance was seen near today's high of 173.50
cents.
After Thursday's close, CSCE reported that certified coffee
stocks rose by 5,000 60-kg bags as of September 17, to 95,120
bags. An additional 8,708 bags were pending grading, the
exchange said.
The CSCE also reported 9,392 bags were graded, with 4,212
bags passing exchange approval.
Turnover on Thursday reached an estimated 8,927 lots.
