December arabicas jumped 5.75 cents per lb on the day, to 173.45 cents, after ranging between 175.75 and 169.25 cents. Spot September, which expires on Thursday, closed 8.50 cents higher, at 194.00 cents, while the remaining contracts finished up 4.95 to 5.70 cents. The September/December switch widened to 20.55 cents compared with 17.80 cents at the close on Tuesday, while December/March 1998 stretched to 12.95 cents versus 12.70 cents the previous session. Arabica prices headed higher from the outset on Wednesday, with steady trade buying toward the lows prompting a round of local short-covering, dealers said. Upward momentum accelerated after the December contract broke above Tuesday's high of 174.25 cents, touching off commission house buy-stops, they said. Traders said the market was underpinned by a revised crop projection from the Brazilian Coffee Exporters' Association (Abecafe), which cut its estimate for the country's 1997/98 coffee crop to 22.4 million 60-kg bags from a previous forecast of 24.0 million bags. Additionally, Abecafe said on Wednesday that Brazil could see a coffee production deficit of more than five million 60-kg bags in the 1997/98 crop year, based on the combined demand of internal consumption and exports with production estimated at 22.4 million bags. Brazil is the world's largest producer of coffee. "It means Brazil could fall short on export availability and that they have to draw on stocks again," said Merrill Lynch analyst Judith Ganes. "It just makes supplies all that much tighter." Abecafe's reduced estimate comes on the heels of revised forecast by leading Brazilian exporter Unicafe. Last week, Unicafe lowered its projection of the 1997/98 crop to 21.6 million bags compared with a June forecast of 23.1 million bags. In June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture pegged the 1997/98 Brazil coffee crop at 28 million bags. "The numbers the USDA have given in the last few years have been accurate, but I can see how Brazil production could be less and it's helping the market stay steady," said Carlos Knoepffler, president of the Miami Coffee Merchants Corp. "The last couple of years in a row, Brazil has had relatively low crops and it makes for a very tight situation." Adding to the market's bullish tone, the head of Colombia's coffee exporters' association, Gabriel Rosas Vega, estimated on Wednesday that production in the 1997/98 coffee year would total no more than 11 million bags. Vega's forecast, which Merrill's Ganes noted was very early, is below the National Coffee Growers' Federation 1997/98 production estimate of about 12 million bags. In other news, Brazilian independent forecasters Somar Meteorologia said Wednesday Brazil's coffee growing regions are expected to see short bursts of rain during the weekend and temperatures are likely to fall into next week with increased cloud cover. Recent hot, dry weather in Brazil ahead of the critical flowering period has caused some concern and provided underlying support, traders said. Technically, traders said December faced resistance near 176-177 cents, followed by 180 cents. On the downside, support was seen near 170 cents. After Wednesday's close, CSCE reported that certified coffee stocks rose by 11 60-kg bags as of September 16, to 90,120 bags. An additional 19,540 bags were pending grading, the exchange said. The CSCE also reported 10,000 bags were graded, with 6,750 bags passing exchange approval. Volume on Wednesday reached an estimated 6,891 lots. 181043 MET sep 97
