"The market was just treading water," said one trader. "Everyone's just waiting for the GCA number to come out." The GCA stock data is slated for release today at 1500 EDT/1900 GMT. Benchmark December arabicas rose 0.55 cent per lb on the day, to 172.90 cents, after ranging between 175.00 and 170.00 cents. Spot September, which expires on Thursday, closed 1.25 cents lower, to 187.00 cents, while the remaining contracts finished up 0.75 to 0.85 cent. The September/December switch shrunk to 14.10 cents compared with 15.90 cents at the close on Friday, while December/March 1998 narrowed to 14.65 cents versus 14.95 cents the previous session. Some dealers viewed today's gains as a minor technical bounce following Friday's major downslide. December arabicas tumbled more than eight percent on Friday, as speculators liquidated long positions in anticipation of a substantial increase in U.S. stockplies during August. Trade sources estimated Friday that the monthly GCA stock report would show as much as a 300,000 60-kg bag increase in U.S. inventories from July's total of 2,335,000 bags. After Friday's sell-off, total open interest declined by 1,037 lots, to 22,994 lots -- as traders reckoned some funds relinquished their recently acquired long positions ahead of the GCA stock report. Estimates for a stock rise in August have ranged widely between 100,000 and 300,000 bags, with most forecasts clustered between 100,000 and 200,000 bags. By comparison, GCA stocks in August 1996 stood at 1,816,000 bags after falling 95,000 bags from the previous month's level. Technically, traders said December faced nearby resistance at 175.00-176.00 cents, with a strong upside hurdle seen at 180.00 cents. Support was pegged at today's low of 170.00 cents. Volume on Monday reached an estimated 5,010 lots, traders said. 161019 MET sep 97
