Traders said scale-down buying by commercial houses lent some strength to the market at the outset, prompting operators who had bet on prices going lower to square positions. Good speculative buying interest was seen for most of the session, helping to lift the day's total volume to an esitmated 33,362 lots. "The trade is still generally quite short, and you also got some speculative buying," said one broker. Position adjustments tied to the nearby switch were a primary feature again Thursday, as speculators rolled positions into March and the distant months ahead of October's expiry. The October-March differential widened to 0.56 cent, from 0.53 cent on Wednesday. Aided by spread and outright buying, most-active March futures briefly rallied to a high of 12.15 cents, a key upside target, before retracing. The expiry on Friday of October options also underpinned the market, dealers said, as the spot contract gravitated back toward the well-bid 11.50 cent strike price. October futures rose 0.16 cent a lb, to 11.56, after ranging from 11.39 to 11.62. March climbed 0.19 cent, to 12.12 cents, while the rest of the board gained 0.13 to 0.18 cent. 121116 MET sep 97
